~ First and Only Green Certified Salon in Marin County ~
San Rafael, CA.—Renaissance House of Beauty became the first and only “green” certified hair and beauty salon in Marin County, California, with its certification by the Florida Association of Beauty Professionals (FAB Professionals). The FAB PRO Green Conscious Salon Certification requires that salons complete both mandatory and elective activities, including setting and communicating policies, involving employees, and expanding existing commitments in areas such as energy use, recycling and waste reduction.
“Conserving energy, recycling and using eco-friendly products are prime concerns for me,” said Martine Langsam, owner of Renaissance House of Beauty and a long-time stylist in the earth-friendly, upscale county north of San Francisco. “I strongly believe that we can keep the health of our clients’ hair, skin and nails our top priority while doing more to preserve the planet.” Langsam says the certification is a way to make a statement that goes beyond good intentions. “Getting a third-party certification demonstrates that even a beauty salon can make a difference. We want to inspire our stylists, our clients, and other beauty professionals.”
Certification activities included completion of a “Green Salon Procedure” that outlines the policies that the salon is committed to implementing and enforcing. Langsam’s employees then showed their own commitment by signing a statement supporting the policies. Waste-reduction activities included expanding the salon’s internal recycling program, recycling clients’ hair-care tools and using post-consumer paper products. Renaissance House of Beauty has also partnered with Matter of Trust (www.matteroftrust.org) for the purpose of donating hair clippings that are woven into oil spill hair mats.
Renaissance House of Beauty uses natural products whenever possible, including products without parabens, preservatives, artificial ingredients or colors. These include Decleor skin-care products, which are free of paraben and preservatives, come in post-consumer-waste packaging, and are produced in sustainable communities; Paul Brown Hawaii, all-natural hair-care products with organic ingredients grown in Hawaii. Renaissance House of Beauty also uses green cleaning products, high-efficiency laundry equipment, energy-efficient lighting, thermostatically controlled climate control, and timers in treatment rooms to conserve energy.
